We are a registered charitable organization, and our Canada Revenue<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Agency number is 81811 7368 RR0001.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">For a time, we operated under an umbrella association of Recovery Associations in BC, as did several<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">other associations. In 2017 we, along with some other Associations on Vancouver Island, separated<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">from this umbrella organization. We felt that we could better serve the Saanich Peninsula and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">surrounding areas more effectively as a smaller and locally operated Association. Every aspect of our Association is facilitated by volunteers, except our Movement and Communication programs. These volunteers, many of whom<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">are Board members, plan and organize entertainment, arrange for community presentations and speakers, facilitate the Caregiver Support Group, and set up and take down the hall each week. Additionally, we have a core group of dedicated volunteers who run the hospitality program, making sure that everyone is welcomed with tea, coffee, and cookies as soon as they arrive for the Social Hour!<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Without all of these dedicated and hardworking people, it would be impossible to keep our Association going. For nearly 30 years he worked in the <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">transportation industry, with HandyDart in Victoria, BC and for a similar service in Edmonton, Alberta. <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">After living in Alberta for 22 years, Gord and his wife Theresa (the current Secretary\/Treasurer) were <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">able to realize their goal of moving back to the Saanich Peninsula in retirement. Gord has been involved<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">with the SPSRA in some capacity since 2017, when his mother was affected by a stroke. He wanted to <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">give back to the Association that has been so helpful to both of his parents. So, in 2024 he joined the <\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Board in the capacity of Treasurer, and recently took on the role of President.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/spstrokerecovery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0965.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;IMG_0965&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-1px|||||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong style=\"font-size: 26px; color: #ffffff;\">David Lawrence<br \/><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Vice President<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff; font-size: 14px;\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff; font-size: 14px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffffff; font-size: x-large;\">Dave graduated with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University.\u00a0 He spent most of his adult years in and around Ottawa, Ontario where he led a very active life cycling, sailing and canoeing.\u00a0 In 2004 he suffered a debilitating stroke that left him with little use of his left side. Nonetheless, Dave recovered sufficiently to move to Sidney a year later.\u00a0 He can now often be seen around the Peninsula aboard his modified recumbent trike.<\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/spstrokerecovery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/P1000915-e1709162883595.jpg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;P1000915&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Theresa Carey<br \/><\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 26px;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Secretary\/Treasurer<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Theresa is a UVic graduate, and in 2023 she retired from public service as a psychologist in the Alberta health care system. While she and her husband Gord (the current President) were living in Alberta for many years, they would visit the Saanich Peninsula regularly to visit friends and family. When Gord\u2019s mother was affected by a stroke in 2017, attending the SPSRA meetings became part of these visits.
